Officials: Woman Stashed $175,000 Of Cocaine In Candy Containers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman from Mexico was arrested after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers found around $175,000 worth of cocaine stashed in candy containers at John F. Kennedy Airport.

Petra Medarda arrived in Queens on a flight from Mexico City on April 18, officials said. According to police, an inspection of her bags led to the seizure of eight bricks of cocaine -- the equivalent of around 10 pounds of the drug, valued at around $175,000.

The cocaine was stashed inside large containers of wafer stick candies, according to officials.

Medarda was turned over to the New York Police Department upon her arrest, officials said.

Medarda now faces narcotics smuggling charges and will be tried in Queens County District Court.
