Coast Guard Searching For Woman In Water Near Perth Amboy
NEW JERSEY (CBSNewYork) -- The Coast Guard was searching for a woman who reportedly went missing off Perth Amboy Victory Bridge in New Jersey Saturday.
As 1010 WINS reported, New Jersey State Police located a body in the Raritan River on Saturday night, using sonar, but a dive team was not able to recover the body due to currents.
Positive identification could not be verified, but authorities believe that it could be the missing swimmer.
Coast Guard Sector New York watchstanders received a missing persons report from Perth Amboy Dispatch 18 around 2 a.m. stating that Anjanae Smith, 22, of Newark went into the river and was swept away by the current. The female's friend, who was nearby, witnessed the incident, officials say.
Friends told police that Smith became upset and distraught before entering the water.
The NYPD's dive team has been assisting Perth Amboy Police and New Jersey State Police.
As CBS2's Matt Kozar reported, dive operations had been suspended due to low tide on Saturday evening.
Dive teams will return to the water in the morning when the tide is higher.
"At the time it was an incoming time and this tide can get very treacherous in this area, especially around the bridge. So there were some heavy currents that were present in this area along with heavy winds," Perth Amboy Police Deputy Chief Larry Catano said.
Anyone with information about the missing swimmer are asked to contact watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York command center at (718) 354-4353.
