City DEP To Open New York City's Reservoirs To Fishing

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The New York City Department of Environmental Protection is encouraging more anglers to fish at the city's reservoirs, streams and lakes this season with a new brochure.

The DEP said the city's upstate watershed offers some of the best fishing in the Northeast and will be open when trout season begins on Wednesday.

The 19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes in New York City's 33,000-acre watershed in the Catskills and Hudson Valley provide high-quality drinking water to more than 9 million residents throughout the five boroughs and northern suburbs.

Anglers will need to have a DEP access permit as well as a state fishing license in order to utilize the area.

The DEP is issuing a fishing brochure this year to help guide anglers through the process of getting their free DEP access permit and take certain precautions to protect water quality and prevent the spread of invasive species.
