City Council To Ask Bratton For Outline On Implementing NYPD Officer Re-training At Hearing
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has promised that all 35,000 NYPD officers will be retrained and the city council will ask him about the regiment at a September 8 hearing.
As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito indicates the council will review what NYPD instruction is now and what changes are planned.
"So the police commissioner has been invited and we expect him to testify. We have spoken to him personally about this matter," she said.
The speaker says the council will drill down for details.
"We have heard in broad strokes from the commissioner that this is something that's happening. Well, we want to understand, obviously, this is training that is going to start being laid soon, is going to be implemented and rolled out very soon. So we want to be able to get into the weeds a little bit and really understand what that's about," Mark-Viverito said.
Commissioner Bratton's popularity may be slipping, but he received a backhanded compliment from one of his harshest critics Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a new poll has shown widespread support for Bratton's quality of life crackdown known as the"broken windows" policing strategy, which has come under fire in recent weeks in New York City.
"We asked, when a cop enforces some low-level offense, does it increase neighborhood tensions, or does it improve the quality of life?" Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, told Lamb. "Quality of life wins hands down, according to New Yorkers."
