Christie On Legalizing Pot: NJ Won't Be 'A Place Where People Fly Into To Get High'
SAYREVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Gov. Chris Christie made clear at a town hall meeting Thursday that he's against legalizing marijuana for recreational use.
"I am not going to turn our state into a place where people fly into to get high," said Christie. "And if people want legalized marijuana in the state, elect a new governor."
There is a proposal in the state legislature that would legalize pot and use the revenues for road repairs.
The issue came up at Christie's town hall meeting in Sayreville Thursday when an emotional mom asked about restrictions on edible forms of medical marijuana.
Jennie Stormes' 14-year-old son has a severe form of epilepsy.
"What happens when my son turns 18 and can no longer eat the edibles because it's for minors only?" she asked the governor.
Christie said he will listen to doctors on the issue, but added he will draw a line.
"I'm not gonna make marijuana legal in this state for recreational use. I'm not gonna make it decriminalized," said the governor.
He allowed the state's medical marijuana law to take effect and agreed last year to some provisions to allow for medical marijuana for children.
Christie is considered a likely contender for the 2016 Republican presidential race.
Recreational marijuana was legalized by voters in Colorado and Washington state.
