Christie Backs Legislation That Would Ban Abortion After 20 Weeks' Pregnancy
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Monday that he is backing federal legislation that would ban abortions at 20 weeks of pregnancy.
The potential Republican presidential candidate endorsed the ``Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act'' in a statement to the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List.
The law would ban abortions at five months of pregnancy.
Quoted in multiple published reports, Christie said: "Today, I am a living example that being pro-life is not a political liability anywhere in America. I also know that there are areas where all Americans -- regardless of being pro-life or pro-choice -- can come together. One proposal that brings Americans together is the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would protect unborn children beginning at 20 weeks, or five months or pregnancy, based on their ability to feel pain."
Christie urged Congress to take swift action.
Christie was once in favor of abortion rights, but says he changed his mind after hearing his daughter's heartbeat when his wife was pregnant with their second child. He says he believes every life is a gift from God.
A spokeswoman for the anti-abortion group says potential Republican contenders were asked where they stood on the issue. Christie was the last to respond.
