Child Survives Horrific School Bus Collision On Long Island
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A frightening crash was caught on camera this week.
Two school buses collided at an intersection on Long Island, and one of them ended up on its side in the Tuesday afternoon accident.
Surveillance video showed one bus running a stop sign before colliding with a smaller bus, CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez reported.
A 7-year-old girl was on board at the time.
The mini bus landed right in front of Sheyla Hernandez's day care center at the intersection of Molloy Street and Mazzini Avenue in Copiague.
"Oh yeah it was loud. I was all the way in the back of the house and I heard it," she said.
Miguel Lopez heard the accident from his house down the street and rushed to the scene.
"From there I was running and I passed the lady over there and I tried to see what I could do, and I remembered the door in the back," he said.
Lopez opened the bus' back door and pulled the young girl to safety. She escaped with only a cut to her head. Lopez said that the bus was leaking gas at the time and that he was acting on a father's instinct.
"Eleven grand-kids and three of them ride the bus all the time. So I was thinking of my grand-kids," he said.
A white stop line at the scene of the accident was repainted on Wednesday to emphasize the requirement to stop at the intersection. Police said that neither driver has been charged or given a ticket.
Neither bus driver was seriously hurt. The driver of the large bus was suspended and tested for drugs and alcohol, the tests came back negative.
