Child In Critical Condition After Bensonhurst Fire

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An early-morning fire in Brooklyn left five people injured, including a child.

The fire broke out around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.

It started on the second floor of a building located at 2416 85th Street in Bensonhurst, just feet from the fire house belonging to Engine Company 253.

The fire gutted the home of a family where neighbors said several people lived.

Neighbors said they saw medical crews trying to revive a small child outside the home.

A family friend stopped by the scene in hopes of getting more information.

"I don't know anything, they didn't tell me anything yet. I'm going to check up on them in the hospital," the man said.

The child is in critical condition after being rushed to a hospital in Coney Island to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation, CBS2's Valerie Castro.

Four other people were treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
