2 BMW Drivers Facing Charges Following Multi-Vehicle Crash On New England Thruway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Two BMW drivers are facing charges following a multi-vehicle crash on the New England Thruway in the Bronx.

Several people were hurt in the wreck, at least one critically.

Police say two BMWs - one white, one gray - were speeding when they crashed around 7 p.m. near the Baychester Avenue exit in Throggs Neck.

One BMW cut the other one off, causing both drivers to lose control, police said. Both cars then slammed into a Kia.

The front-end damage to the white BMW and its deployed airbags reflect how violent the crash was.

Police have not estimated how fast the cars were going, though they say they were clearly speeding.

In all, nine people were hurt, most seriously the 68-year-old driver of the Kia, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A 58-year-old woman was also hospitalized in stable condition. The Kia was left a mangled mess, CBS2's Aundrea Cline-Thomas reported.

One of the BMWs also struck a Honda.

The BMW drivers, 31-year-old Christopher Coates and 23-year-old Jahmeik White, were both charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.
