CBS2 Exclusive: Elderly Woman Violently Sexually Assaulted On New Year's Day
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Police were working Friday night, to track down the man who dragged an elderly woman to a stairwell and attacked her in her own neighborhood.
A Brooklyn grandmother was recovering in the hospital, after police sources say she was violently sexually assaulted.
CBS2's Weijia Jiang spoke exclusively with the woman's daughter soon after she returned from visiting her elderly mother at the hospital.
"I don't know why someone would do this," the woman said from behind a door.
She asked to remain unidentified for the safety of her family.
Her 75-year-old mother is recovering from a New Year's Day attack.
The incident left the neighborhood outraged.
"He's an animal. That was an animal. I don't understand why he did it. For what?" Fort Greene resident Annette Wilson said.
Police sources say a man dragged the victim to the bottom of a stairwell outside of a Fort Greene housing complex on North Orchard Walk before sexually assaulting her and stealing her wallet.
It happened around 8 a.m. Thursday when the victim was out collecting cans and bottles. Her abandoned cart was still on the scene on Friday night.
"I see her all the time. She's a very nice woman. She says 'hi.' When I heard about it, it hurt my heart," neighbor Ira Christopher said.
Police sources said someone found the woman bleeding with her pants down.
Her daughter said that her mother doesn't remember what happened, because she has early signs of Alzheimer's, but she is in pain.
The bone around her eye was fractured, requiring surgery.
The victim's family, including three young grandchildren, is anxious for an arrest.
The NYPD Special Victims Unit is aggressively looking to catch a suspect before he hurts someone else.
The victim's daughter said her mother has a long way to go to recover, and doctors say she'll be in the hospital for at least 10 days.
