Castro's Remains Laid To Rest In Cuba

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba (CBSNewYork) -- After nine days of national mourning, former Cuban President Fidel Castro was laid to rest Sunday.

Though he was remembered by many as a ruthless dictator, Castro will be missed by scores of people in the country he led for decades.

Before dawn Sunday, thousands began lining the streets ahead of Castro's funeral procession.

Cubans lined the streets as a Jeep pulling the late president's ashes passed by. They waved Cuban flags and carried posters depicting the dictator.

Others celebrated the revolution that thrust Castro into power. Some chanted, " ¡Yo soy Fidel! or "I am Fidel!"

Castro's ashes finished their 500-mile journey Sunday, arriving at a cemetery in Santiago de Cuba. His tomb is now one of the most important sites on the Communist island.

Cuban President Raúl Castro placed the ashes of his older brother inside the tomb.

Castro was interred in front of the mausoleum of Cuban national hero José Martí, and next to the memorial rebel soldiers killed in an attack Castro led in 1953.

A few dozen mourners were able to enter the cemetery and see Castro's tomb, just as it was sealed as soldiers stood guard.

Castro, died Friday, Nov. 25 at 90.
