Cashman On WFAN: I'd Acquire A Starter Right Now If I Could
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- It's no secret.
The Yankees desperately need starting pitching.
Considered the club's strength coming into the 2014 season, the Bombers' starting rotation has been decimated by injuries.
CC Sabathia will likely be out until at least July with a knee injury, Michael Pineda is on the disabled list with a back strain and Ivan Nova is done for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Mainstays Masahiro Tanaka -- was has been utterly brilliant -- and Hiroki Kuroda are now part of a makeshift rotation that includes Vidal Nuno, David Phelps and Chase Whitley.
With so much uncertainty on the mound, when does Brian Cashman pull the trigger and acquire a top-line starter?
"I'd do it now if I could," the Yankees' general manager told WFAN co-hosts Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts on Tuesday afternoon. "First there's gotta be players that are available that actually you can try to acquire. And then it's about acquiring and matching up. Those animals don't exist right now, but if they did and we could match up, we'd try to pull something if we could."
Tanaka, who has been even better than advertised this season, will try to stay perfect and improve to 7-0 when the Bombers take on the Cubs in Chicago on Wednesday night.
As for the shortstop position, there are plenty of questions as to what the future holds with Derek Jeter retiring after the season.
Is next year's starting shortstop on the current Yankees roster?
"I would say no," Cashman told Joe & Evan.
In his final campaign, the future Hall of Famer is batting .266 with a homer and eight RBIs.
