Worker Rescued After Being Pinned Underneath Pile Of Steel In Industrial Accident In Carlstadt

CARLSTADT, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - A factory worker was rushed to the hospital after getting pinned beneath hundreds of pounds of steel in an industrial facility in Carlstadt Wednesday morning.

A pile of steel, weighing approximately 3,500 pounds, fell on the worker at the Knickerbocker Bed Co. on Commercial Avenue at around 9:30 a.m., fire officials said.

"The guy was putting steel from a crane onto a pile and the crane shifted," Fire Chief Stephen Capuano said. "The load of steel fell on the guy's leg and pinned both legs."

The worker was conscious and alert, but his legs were pinned beneath the steel, authorities said.

He was rescued about an hour later.

"We relieved the pressure, got the guy out," Capuano said. "His status right now I don't know, he was conscious, but he's not doing so good right now."

The cause is under investigation.
