Perhaps the last two installments of By The Numbers stirred up some strong sentiments as to whether New York City is more of an American League metropolis or a National League stronghold.
I thought I would round out this discussion by choosing all-time teams: one comprised solely of Yankees and the other with players from the New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Mets.
BY THE NUMBERS: IS NEW YORK A NATIONAL LEAGUE OR AMERICAN LEAGUE CITY? (PART 1)
BY THE NUMBERS: IS NEW YORK A NATIONAL LEAGUE OR AMERICAN LEAGUE CITY? (PART 2)
I made my selections and evaluations using the following guidelines:
- I took the liberty of moving some players to a different position (ex: putting Joe DiMaggio in center field while stationing Mickey Mantle in left field).
- I considered players' records for only the years they played in The Big Apple (1903 through 2013). For example, Sandy Koufax would make an all-time Los Angeles Dodgers team, but not its Brooklyn counterpart.
- I gave the "edge" to one player over another only if I felt it was clear that he was truly superior to the other.
- I picked two catchers for each team.
- I chose a pitching staff comprised of five starting pitchers and one reliever.
- At the end I give a prediction of which team would win in a best-of-seven series.
Prediction: Because of superior hitting and Mariano Rivera, the Yankees defeat NYC NL 4-2 in the seven-game series.
Who do you think would win?
