Smart Gun Design Competition Open To NYC College Students

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is challenging college students to fight gun violence by developing better and safer smart gun technology.

"We want to see a decrease in death, decrease in those who are injured," Adams said, announcing a $1 million competition open to college students in the five boroughs. "We're looking for something different, we believe that ideas are out there that have yet been placed on the table."

Adams believes smart guns could reduce accidental deaths and suicides.

"We have seen headlines throughout the years talking about a child innocently pulling the trigger taking his own life or taking the life of a loved one," Adams said.

The designs are due in June.
