Brooklyn-Queens Expressway reopens early as crews finish weekend repairs ahead of schedule
NEW YORK -- The weekend shutdown on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway ended Sunday, almost 24 hours earlier than expected, as crews wrapped up repairs ahead of schedule.
The New York City Department of Transportation made the announcement on X.
The latest BQE closure was the third and final one of the year as the city added critical concrete and steel reinforcements.
Here are the parts of the expressway that were impacted:
BQE closures for June 2024
The Queens-bound side was scheduled to be completely closed from the Atlantic Avenue entrance ramp to the Manhattan Bridge exit ramp at Sands Street from 2 a.m. Saturday until 4 a.m. Monday.
The Staten Island-bound BQE remained open.
The following ramps were closed:
- Third Avenue entrance ramp (open for buses only)
- Sixth Avenue entrance ramp
- Prospect Expressway entrance ramp (HOV lane to HLC tunnel open)
- Atlantic Avenue entrance ramp
Signs for detours were in place to help drivers.
BQE Atlantic Avenue detour
Drivers had to exit at Atlantic Avenue, turn left onto Boerum Place then turn right onto Tillary Street and take the ramp onto the BQE.
BQE Third Avenue entrance ramp detour
Drivers exited the Gowanus Expressway at Exit 21 to Third Avenue, then had to travel along Third Avenue, turn left onto Flatbush Avenue and make a right onto Tillary Street to take the ramp onto the BQE.
BQE Prospect Expressway detour
Drivers traveled along the Prospect Expressway towards the Gowanus Expressway, then took the exit at Hamilton Avenue. They had to turn right onto Hicks Street and make another right onto Atlantic Avenue, then turn left onto Boerum Place, right onto Tillary Street and take the ramp onto the BQE.
BQE Linden Boulevard detour
Truck drivers exited the Gowanus Expressway at Prospect Expressway, then at 10th Avenue. They had to turn right onto 10th Avenue, then left onto McDonald Avenue, make another left onto Caton Avenue, and continue onto Linden Boulevard.
The detour took truck drivers to Conduit Avenue with connections to the Nassau, Van Wyck and Long Island expressways.
