NYPD: Suspects In Custody After Shootout With Police In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Three men are in custody after a shootout with police in Brooklyn that left one of the suspects hurt.

An unmarked police vehicle could be seen Thursday morning with broken glass and covered in bullet holes near Park and North Portland avenues in Fort Greene.

It all started around 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, when police said three plainclothes officers in the unmarked car observed three men involved in a dispute.

When the officers turned their car around to approach the men, at least two of the suspects opened fire, police said.

"I heard a 'pow, pow, pow, pow, pow,'" resident Beverly Thomas told CBS2's Andrea Grymes. "A lot of shooting."

The unmarked car was hit numerous times, but the shots missed the two officers and lieutenant inside, police said. They returned fire as the suspects took off on foot, police said.

Investigators found a .45-caliber gun under the tire of a nearby vehicle.

"There was a bag that was recovered from the scene as well, a pink piece of luggage. I believe it belongs to the three individuals. In that bag was a considerable amount of ammunition as well," Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton visited the scene and commended the officers for their work.

Many people who live and work in the area are disgusted that the suspects would open fire, Grymes reported.

"Why would you shoot at someone else? You wouldn't want them to shoot at your own family," said resident William Phillips. "People got to start taking into account that life is precious."

"It's horrible," said Thomas Bellinger, who works nearby. "Who does that? Who shoots at police? And for what?"

One of the suspects, a 23-year-old man, later turned up at Beth Israel Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left leg, police said. He was taken into custody and is in stable condition.

Police said the other two suspects -- a 24-year-old man and a 21-year-old man -- were apprehended Thursday morning in Brooklyn.

The NYPD and U.S. Marshals took one of the men into custody at a nearby building on Edwards Street, Grymes reported. The other was found in an unknown location.

Police said a man who drove the first suspect to the hospital has also been taken into custody, 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported.

The three officers were taken to the hospital for ringing in their ears.
