Cops: Woman Dead, At Least 9 Injured In Brooklyn Hit-And-Run
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman has died, and at least nine were injured after a hit-and-run in Brooklyn on Thursday, according to officials.
According to officials, a woman was crossing Pennsylvania Avenue and Wortman in East New York at around 7:13 p.m. when she was struck by a vehicle.
The vehicle then went on to strike six parked cars and injure at least nine other people before coming to a stop, police told 1010 WINS.
Witnesses say they saw a man in his 20s, driving a white Mercedes sedan hit the woman, then try to keep going but several cars were in his way, CBS2's Dave Carlin reported.
"She was driving and he hit her on the side so he hit the lady and then hit it from the side knocked her over the divider and caused the other cars to collide trying to get away," one witness said.
The driver then got out and fled on foot and was caught a few blocks away, according to police. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
"He was running in the traffic like he was trying to literally get himself killed," Kyra Schuler, of East New York, said. "He got hit by car and he went down, got up went back into traffic and tried to get hit again."
Police said the driver of the Mercedes tried to carjack at least one vehicle as part of his getaway.
The woman who was initially struck was sent to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition, officials said.
The woman died shortly after, according to police.
The victim's name will not be released until the family is notified.
