De Blasio: 13 Brooklyn Buildings Protected As Affordable Housing Until 2047
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A group of 13 buildings in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights, Brooklyn, will now be protected as affordable housing through 2047, according to city officials.
The buildings will accommodate up to 212 households making $24,000 a year and provide placement for the formerly homeless, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio, who announced the initiative on Monday.
According to de Blasio, the city financed 21,041 affordable apartments in 2015, with a total of 40, 2014 affordable units financed since the mayor took office in January 2014.
"We're very proud of what's been achieved in 2015," de Blasio said. "But literally it is only just beginning."
The affordable homes include both new construction and remodeled units, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.
"That is now actually putting us ahead of pace to reach our goal of 200,000 units by the end of 2024," de Blasio said.
Mayor de Blasio revealed his ambitious 10-year, $41 million affordable housing plan in May 2014. De Blasio said it's the biggest housing program "initiated by any city in the history of the U.S."
The plan has faced opposition from local officials in targeted areas like Brooklyn, where rent is rapidly on the rise.
