All-Clear Given After Unstable Building Facade Prompts Evacuation In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Residents are back in their homes after concerns over an unstable building facade at a construction site prompted an early morning evacuation in the Bronx.
The problem was reported around 6:30 a.m. Thursday at building under construction on Southern Boulevard near Freeman Street in the Foxhurst section.
"We were all alerted by the fire department that there was a buckling sound within the construction site," one resident told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman.
Residents in the area were evacuated as authorities blocked off the street.
"The firefighter told us to get out of the building, the building needed to be evacuated," said resident Hector Noriega. "We didn't know why. They said if it collapsed, it could take all three buildings down next to it."
The Department of Buildings gave the all-clear around 9 a.m. and residents were allowed to return.
No injuries were reported.
Trains on the 2 and 5 subway lines had been suspended in both directions for a time through the area, but service has since resumed with extensive delays.
The MTA says delays will have an impact on 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 trains in the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn. Southbound 6 express trains are also running local from Parkchester to 3rd Avenue-138th Street.
