Officer shot armed suspect in the Bronx, NYPD says

NEW YORK — New York City Police officers shot a man they say was armed with a gun in the Bronx on Friday.

It happened near White Plains Road and Lafayette Avenue in the Soundview section just after 3 p.m. Police say the entire incident was caught on police body-worn cameras and external cameras.

Alleged gunman shot twice by NYPD officers, officials say

Police say officers were sent to the scene after receiving a 911 call stating there was some sort of large dispute and that there was a gun involved.

According to police, video shows two suspects coming through a gate at the rear of the building as officers arrive in their marked vehicle.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell says as soon as the suspects saw the officers, one of them pulled out a gun and took "a shooting stance."

Police say officers opened fire, striking the suspect twice in the leg. According to Chell, the suspect never fired any shots.

Officers then handcuffed the alleged gunman, rendered aid and transported him to a local hospital for treatment, according to police.

The second suspect got away, and police are still searching for him.

Chell says a loaded 9mm gun and a knife were recovered at the scene.

No officers were injured, but two were taken to a local hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

The investigation is ongoing.

2nd NYPD-involved shooting this week

According to police, the suspect had been arrested and indicted on a gun charge in September.

This is the second time this week NYPD officers were involved in a shooting.

"Our criminal justice system needs to be fixed. We saw it this week – the three people stabbed by someone who shouldn't have been on the street. We saw it Tuesday in Queens when our cops had to confront a career criminal on lifetime parole who just committed two robberies that night, fired at people, citizen gets involved, and shoots our officer in the leg. We are very frustrated. We have to fix this," Chell said.
