NYPD: Officer Pinned By Carjacking Suspect's Car Shoots Driver, Ends Crime Spree
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - An NYPD officer - pinned between cars - opens fire at a trio of carjacking suspects in the Bronx and ends a three-borough crime spree.
It happened Monday morning around 11:40 a.m. at the intersection of East 162 Street and Sheridan Avenue.
Officers in the area were on the lookout for a group of people in connection with a robbery pattern and carjackings across the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens.
It started on Sunday morning with a carjacking in the Bronx. Then the group traveled to Manhattan and committed a robbery, according to NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan. They then moved on to Brooklyn and committed two more robberies and carjacked another vehicle, Monahan said.
When police moved in on them Monday, they tried to drive off and ran into one the officers, pinning her.
The officer who was pinned fired at the driver, who was hit in the chest. The driver, a woman, was taken to Lincoln Hospital in critical condition. The two other suspects inside the vehicle were also taken into custody. They weren't injured.
The officer who was struck by the vehicle has been hospitalized with hip and leg injuries.
