NYPD: 77-Year-Old Man Pushing Wheelchair Attacked In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 77-year-old man pushing a wheelchair in the Bronx was hurt when police said another man knocked him to the ground.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. Sunday on Cruger Avenue.

Surveillance video of the incident shows the victim pushing his wheelchair. The suspect in a red jacket approaches him and starts talking to him when police said he abruptly knocks the man to the ground.

The suspect is then seen picking up the victim and placing him back in his wheelchair, even securing his feet in the stirrups. He then sends him on his way.

"I think it's horrifying," resident Jimmy Davis told CBS2's Scott Rapaport. "I think people like that should be put away for like life. It's an abomination."

"That shouldn't happen to nobody," said resident Damon Williams. "Let alone an old person."

"It's getting bad around here," said resident Deborah Jefferson."Can't even be in a wheelchair no more."

Police said the victim suffered a fractured pelvis and internal bleeding. Despite his injuries, the man was able to wheel away under his own power as the suspect walked off in the opposite direction.

The victim was admitted to an area hospital where he underwent surgery. He remains in critical but stable condition, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

The suspect is described by police as a black man in his 20s between 5'10" and 6' tall weighing between 145 and 175 pounds. He was seen wearing a gray hooded sweater, a red jacket and black pants.
