2 Young Children Found On Street In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Two toddlers in dirty diapers were found wandering the streets in the Bronx Thursday afternoon.
As CBS2's Lou Young reported, the children, believed to be about 2 to 3 years old, were found on Longfellow Avenue between Aldus Street and East 165th Street in the Melrose section of the Bronx around 12:30 p.m.
They were not accompanied by any adults.
An area resident, Kenneth White, found the toddlers and took them in before they were hospitalized.
"I hear a scream, so I turned around – it was two little girls running towards me… no parents behind them, no father, no mother. No shoes on – just their Pampers, that's it," White said. "I'd never seen these kids before. So I went inside. I gave them Yoo-Hoo, cookies, and then my friend there bring them clothes; pants and shoes, and we dressed them until the ambulance came."
The children were taken to Lincoln Medical Center, where they were reported to be a little rattled, but in good condition.
Meanwhile, after the ambulance left, a woman claiming to be the children's mother rushed to the scene. She said she realized the children let themselves out of their apartment on Longfellow Avenue and wandered away.
The woman was frantic as she rushed to the hospital. The children were with the Administration for Children's Services late Thursday, and their mother was taken to the NYPD 41st Precinct.
The mother was arrested and charged with child endangerment late Thursday, 1010 WINS reported.
