Broadway in the Boros returns Friday with free performance in Downtown Brooklyn

"Broadway in the Boros" brings musical performances to Brooklyn

NEW YORK -- "Broadway in the Boros" made its return Friday after a pandemic pause.

CBS2's Dave Carlin was there as performers from popular shows took the stage in Downtown Brooklyn.

Fort Greene parent Cheryl Tan brought her 8-year-old son, Jeremy. He's been in school plays, but this was his very first brush with Broadway professionals.

"They're pretty good voices," Jeremy said. "It's really cool."

Broadway in the Boros is back tonight

"We were on a hiatus for the last two years," said Anne del Castillo, commissioner for the mayor's office of media and entertainment. "To do these performances in cultural hubs throughout the city so that the local communities can draw that connection between Broadway, their local culture and their own interest in the arts."

Friday's event included performances by cast members from "Beetlejuice," "Chicago," "The Book of Mormon" and off-Broadway's "Little Shop of Horrors."

Performers who just last night were on a Broadway theater stage said they were glad to be back.

"Broadway in the Boros is Broadway for everybody," said actor Brian O'Brien.

O'Brien is a veteran of six Broadway shows, and he's been in the cast of "Chicago" for a decade now.

"Normally, we're in the dark theater with fun lights and spotlights, but here we are, we have the best spotlight in the world, which is sunshine," he said.

Broadway in the Boros events are foot-tapping fun and always free for all.

The series continues its tour over the next four weeks:

  • Queens: Sept. 23 with Wicked," "Six" and "Beetlejuice"
  • The Bronx: Oct. 7 with "Moulin Rouge! The Musical," "Wicked" and off-Broadway's "Kinky Boots"
  • Staten Island: Oct. 14 with "Chicago," "Moulin Rouge! The Musical" and off-Broadway's "Kinky Boots"
