Bride Digs Through Trash At City Dump In Fruitless Search For Wedding Dress

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A new bride is down was the dumps Friday night after her wedding dress ended up in the garbage.

CBS 2's Dave Carlin was there on Friday, as she took drastic measures to find the special gown.

A garbage dump that takes trash from Manhattan's Upper East Side was the last place that the newlywed wanted to be, but the young woman said she had to go through every single bag in the warehouse.

She was trying to find her wedding dress, which was accidentally thrown in the trash.

"There was a cockroach in the box," she said.

So she put the box outside of her apartment door in the hallway. Workers in the building assumed that it was trash. She ran to the street and caught up with the garbage truck two doors down.

"They were right there so I said 'hey,"" she explained.

Sanitation workers said that she could follow the truck. It wasn't looking good on Friday night, as she went through all of the bags for a second time. It's possible that the dress never made it.

There was a glimmer of hope when she found some of her husband's clothes, but her dress wasn't there.

The woman was disappointed, but grateful that workers tried to help. They do these searches for people about twice a month.

"Sometimes we find engagement rings, religious artifacts, wallets, unfortunately this wedding dress we weren't successful in finding," Waste Management District Manager John Sullivan said.

"The department of sanitation, everyone deserves a raise," the woman said.

Now, she'll sleep, after a very long shower.
