8-Year-Old Boy Found In Cruise Ship Pool Dies Of Injuries

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- An 8-year-old boy who fell into a pool on a cruise ship off the coast of New Jersey late last month has died of his injuries.

The New York City medical examiner's office said Monday that Prince Adepoju of Maryland died of accidental drowning. Staten Island University hospital told the Staten Island Advance that the boy died July 2.

The boy was found unresponsive in a swimming pool on Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas after it departed from a Bayonne, New Jersey port on June 30.

The ship was a few miles off Breezy Point, Queens when the boy was found. The Coast Guard said the boy had been in the water for eight to 10 minutes.

The boy was treated by the medical team on the ship. Emergency responders rushed to the vessel and took the boy from an NYPD chopper to a waiting ambulance, where he was then rushed to the hospital.

The medical examiner also says a "seizure disorder'' was a contributing condition in the boy's death.

Royal Caribbean officials have issued a statement saying they're "heartbroken,'' and their thoughts and prayers are with the family.

It's still unclear what led to the incident. Royal Carribbean said their pools do not have life guards.

Back in February, passengers on the Anthem of the Seas endured what they described as a nightmare journey after a winter storm rocked the ship.

Later that month, another cruise had to be cut short due to storms and a norovirus outbreak.
