Boy, 10, Critically Injured After Being Hit By Car In Lindenhurst, Long Island
LINDENHURST, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 10-year-old boy was left in critical condition this weekend after being hit by a car while crossing a road in Lindenhurst, Long Island.
John Johnson was crossing Montauk Highway at South 13th Street with his mother around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, when he was struck by a 2008 Toyota Scion headed west on the highway, Suffolk County police said.
John was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, where he was reported in critical condition with a head injury, police said.
The driver of the Scion – Cory Pettit, 21, of Lindenhurst – and his female passenger were not injured. Police were safety-checking the car Sunday afternoon, but no one was charged with a crime.
Detectives asked anyone who might have witnessed the crash to call the Suffolk County police First Squad at (631) 854-8152.
The incident happened about 3 1/2 hours before another child was struck by a car. Brianna Soplin, 13, was killed while crossing the Hempstead Turnpike at Gardiners Avenue in Levittown just after midnight, Nassau County police said.
The driver sped off afterward, and was last seen going east on Hempstead Turnpike and then turning north onto the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, police said. The vehicle is described as a late-model blue Town and Country minivan.
