Boulder Damages Metro-North Tracks, Causes Delays On Hudson Line

GARRISON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Delays on Metro-North's Hudson Line caused chaos for hundreds of commuters Saturday after a boulder came down onto the tracks near the Garrison station.

The MTA told 1010 WINS the boulder came down onto the tracks at around 2:30 p.m. The boulder hit Track 2, then made contact with Track 1.

The rock slide shut down service between Garrison and Peekskill on the Hudson Line, CBS 2's Don Champion reported. The disruption tacked hours onto journeys both north and south.

Hundreds of people waited in long lines to get bused to other Metro-North trains.

"It was poorly done; very poorly handled," said Danny Flax.

"They didn't tell us anything, and then the told us we were getting off and going to New York City then to Peekskill. Then they told us sorry you can't get off, you have to go someplace else," said Debra Connery Smith.

The service disruption hit at a bad time for Yankees fans, Champion reported.

"I left the Yankee game at 3:30-4 o'clock. It's 9 o'clock and I'm still waiting to get home," said Flax.

"It was a big, long wait around for like an easy half-hour," said passenger Robert Ricci. Then the buses were overloaded to no end."

Even after getting off the bus, many people faced long waits for trains to arrive.

"Very frustrating. I normally like the ride from New York City, but today was just too much," said another passenger.

"Normally they do a decent job, but they dropped the ball as they say," Flax said.

There were no injuries related to the incident, WCBS 880 reported.

Just after 11 p.m. the MTA said the Hudson Line had returned to normal service with trains operating on or close to schedule, 1010 WINS reported. It remained unclear if both tracks were repaired.
