Burned body found in shopping cart leaves Yonkers Police with many unanswered questions

Body set on fire in shopping cart in Westchester, police say

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers police are investigating the gruesome discovery of a burned body in a shopping cart.

The body was found by officials who were responding to a fire under the Oak Street Bridge near the Yonkers-Mt. Vernon border at around 2 a.m. Monday.

Officials extinguished the fire before making the shocking discovery of a body in a shopping cart on the sidewalk.

Police said the body was likely placed in the cart and then set on fire.

Investigators have been unable to determine victim's ID

The age and gender of the victim remain unknown. According to police, the body was burned so badly that investigators are having a difficult time figuring out who they were and how they died.

But a source close to the investigation told CBS News New York there is evidence the victim was killed in New York City before their body was disposed of in Yonkers.

Police are reviewing surveillance video and looking for any witnesses who could help them figure out what happened.
