Body Recovered From Hudson River Could Be Missing Kayaker
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Crews have recovered a body in the Hudson River that could be a kayaker who has been missing for more than a month.
As CBS2's Matt Kozar reported, video provided to CBS2 shows police boats in the Hudson River near the Cornwall Yacht Club. That's where they pulled an unidentified body onto the docks Saturday morning.
The body was found floating in the water near where 46-year-old Vincent Viafore went missing while kayaking with his fiancée on April 19.
Viafore's fiancée, 35-year-old Angelika Graswald, reported him missing and claimed his kayak capsized in choppy water near Bannerman Island.
But prosecutors claim Graswald tampered with the vessel and made incriminating statements to investigators like "It felt good knowing he would die," Kozar reported.
Graswald spoke with News 12 Westchester shortly after Viafore's disappearance.
"I saw him struggling a little bit. He was trying to figure out how to paddle the waves because they were getting crazy and, then I just saw him flip," she said.
Prosecutors said Graswald stood to benefit from Viafore's $250,000 life insurance policy. She's since been indicted on a second-degree murder charge.
Forensic scientist Michael Archer worked on the infamous Jordan Van Der Sloot case. He's now working for Graswald's defense team.
"It's my understanding that the body was found today was found by a recreational boater. That the person was found floating face down and that they were in the general vicinity of where Mr. Viafore was last seen," Archer said.
Graswald remains in custody, bail was set at $3 million
