Police: Body found inside garbage bag in the Bronx

NEW YORK -- Police are investigating after a body was found in the Bronx on Saturday.

Officers were responding to a 911 call near Whitlock Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard in the Longwood section around 11 a.m. when they found the body, believed to be a man, inside a garbage bag in a shopping cart.

The sidewalk in that area is closed due to construction, and sources say the body was found near the construction site.

The NYPD's crime scene unit and forensics team were on the scene for several hours, trying to figure out what happened and who dumped the body.

Fear could be felt in the neighborhood.

"I have to carry my mace now ... I don't know how else I'm gonna live," neighbor Annette LeGrand said.

"I'm surprised, believe me ... I know a lot of people cut through here," said one man who has lived in the neighborhood for over four decades.

"People come around pushing carts and everything, put their garbage there or they dump it right here behind my building," LeGrand said.

Police have not released the name or age of the victim yet.

The cause of death still unknown.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers.
