Black Bear Caught On Camera Destroying Beehives To Get To Honey
MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- That's definitely not Winnie the Pooh going after that honey.
A black bear was caught on camera with sticky fingers, destroying George Easley's five beehives at his home in Morris County.
"I don't know how many are specifically in these, but 30 to 50 thousand in a hive would be reasonable," Easley told CBS2's Alice Gainer.
Easley set up the motion-sensor camera after one of his hives was initially damaged in early December.
Last week, the camera caught the bear knocking over the beehives and licking the honey. The bear even showed up several days in a row at least once around dinnertime.
"[The bear] was not intimidated at all when I came out with a flashlight," Easley told CBS2. "Put the flashlight on him, he'd just look up and go back."
It's the first time Easley has seen a bear on his property in the 15 years of beekeeping. He doesn't think the bear will be back after police took a shot at the animal.
"Well after the police shot him in the rear with some rubber buck shot, he hasn't been back," he told CBS2.
Easley said he may put up an electric fence so this doesn't happen in the future.
