Bill Murray Leads Group Of Poets Across Brooklyn Bridge For Fundraising Event
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Actor Bill Murray led hundreds of poetry lovers over the Brooklyn Bridge Monday for an annual fundraising event.
Poets House's Poetry Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
"It starts with a meeting here at the foot of the bridge -- the Manhattan side. We'll perform a couple of poems, then we march out there and we stop by the first stanchion and read some more poems. Then we march down the other side," Murray told 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten.
Murray said he's not a poet but appreciates poetry, especially those pieces that showcase all that New York City has to offer.
"It touches people," Murray said. "I mean, just marching across the bridge with this and hearing the poems here and hearing them on the way over -- if you just went as far as hearing Walt Whitman on the other side and you went home, it would change you. It would change your day, it would change your week."
Among the poets were some youngsters from P.S. 1 who read their poetry about crossing the East River to the delight of even the most veteran of poets in attendance.
