Bids Reach Over $1M For 1909 T206 Honus Wagner Card

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - It's time to start thinking about baseball again with Opening Night set for Sunday and some fans are dreaming about one of the sport's rarest collectibles.

For baseball card collectors, it's the Holy Grail.

"The T206 Honus Wagner is generally considered the most valuable baseball card in the world. There are about 50 to 60 believed to exist," Brian Dwyer with Robert Edward Auctions said.

Dwyer told WCBS 880's Jim Smith they are taking bids on one for the next three weeks. In just the first few days, the price has already reached over a million dollars.

"The typical buyer for a Wagner ranges from diehard card collector to somebody that wants the best of the best.," Dwyer said.

The 1909 Honus Wagner was passed down through generations of a family in Oceanside, New York, and sold in 2008.

Over the past century, the card has only had two owners. Only four other cards in the world are in better condition.
