Breast Cancer Awareness Month: How To Get Involved In NYC

October is synonymous with breast cancer awareness. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is one of most common types of cancers in women. With awareness and early detection, women have greater chances of survival. From fundraisers to walks and products, here are some of the bests ways to raise awareness this month. Barry's Bootcamp, one of New York's leading fitness centers, is helping the fight against breast cancer with a fundraising class and reception on October 29 at their Upper East Side location. This class offers traditional 60-minute high intensity interval training workout,  led by Natalie Raitano and Matty Maggiacomo, with music by DJ Aaron Aanenson, At the conclusion of class, a reception will begin with cocktails and lite bites. Each attendee will receive a limited-edition Barry's Bootcamp swag bag filled with more than $300 worth of products. Barry's Bootcamp will donate proceeds to the Dubin Breast Center of The Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai.

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

From Randall's Island to SoHo and Chinatown, people will explore Manhattan like never before with the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.  The two-day, 39.3- mile walk starts on October 15. Since its formation in 2003, the annual fundraiser raised over $550 million and takes place in various cities across the country. Whether people are a native New Yorker or visiting from out of town, this walk offers the best tour of Manhattan while raising money to fight breast cancer.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

One of the American Cancer Society's premier events to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer, the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk brings together breast cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers on October 16th. With numerous locations throughout the area, people can join the fight against breast cancer in Brooklyn, Central Park, Long Island, Staten Island, Queens and other locations. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer seeks better ways to prevent, detect, and treat breast cancer, as well as provide help and hope to people facing the disease.

As people battle breast cancer, it is important to understand the story of other survivors. Melanie Young is a seven-year breast cancer survivor and author of the award winning book "Getting Things Off My Chest: A Survivor's Guide to Staying Fearless and Fabulous in the Face of Breast Cancer." Encouraging women to tackle their battle, Young offers tips on how to stay focused and helpful questions to ask doctors. A portion of each sale will benefit the Susan G Komen of Greater New York City, which provides grants for research and help for women throughout the New York City area.

Observed each year on the third Friday of October, National Mammography Day began with President Clinton's official proclamation in 1993. Yes, it can be hard to make that call, but early detection and mammography saves countess lives each year. If you've been procrastinating, take a deep breath and make an appointment. Consider buddying up for morale support and schedule a mammogram for a friend, too.
