Bergen County Officials Investigate Early Morning Fatal Hit-And-Run Accident
ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Authorities in Bergen County have launched an investigation following an early morning fatal hit-and-run accident on Route 4.
As WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported, the pedestrian was killed on the Grand Avenue entrance ramp to Route 4 in Englewood. The victim was dragged onto the highway, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said.
Detectives were investigating the eastbound stretch of Route 4 near the crash site trying to figure out how the man was hit and killed. The victim's body was found at 4:15 a.m.
Gregory Baxter lives in a nearby apartment complex and said the victim also lived there and worked as a maintenance man and landscaper.
"I'm so sad to hear this this morning. I just seen him yesterday. Can't believe it, life is so short," he told Putney. "Everybody in the complex loved him. He made everybody laugh."
"He probably went to the store for a quick run before he started work because you know they work early in the morning," the victim's friend, Aaron Batten, added.
Less than a mile away along Route 4 at the new Dunkin' Donuts inside a BP gas station shop, the manager checked surveillance video to see if the victim came in and if one of their outside cameras caught the vehicle that hit him.
