2 dead after car crash on Belt Parkway in Queens

NEW YORK -- Two people have died after a crash on the Belt Parkway early Saturday.

It happened around 4 a.m. on the westbound side of the parkway near Springfield Boulevard.

Police say a 35-year-old man driving a Dodge Challenger was apparently speeding in the left lane of the parkway and side-swiped a Mazda CX-5 traveling in the center lane.

According to police, after side-swiping the vehicle, the driver of the Challenger veered onto the grass shoulder and hit a pole, which caused the vehicle to be split in half.

Both the driver and a 29-year-old woman in the rear passenger seat were ejected from the vehicle, police say.

The 29-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police said a 32-year-old woman who was behind the wheel of the Mazda remained at the scene and was not hurt.

Officials did not release the names of the people involved.
