Teenager, innocent bystander shot on subway train in Brooklyn

NEW YORK -- Police are investigating after two people were shot on the subway in Brooklyn.

It happened just after 5:30 p.m. on a northbound C train near the Ralph Avenue subway station in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

"I've never heard of that before and I've been living here over 10 years," straphanger Keneisha Williams said.

Police sources tell us a 17-year-old boy had an argument with another passenger aboard a moving train. That passenger allegedly pulled out a gun, shot the teenager in his hand and shot another passenger -- an innocent bystander in his 50s -- in the ankle.

"That could've just been me. It could've been her. It could've been anyone," straphanger Anna Talapa said.

"We've been pleading at Passengers United for years with the MTA, our city and state officials who keep downplaying the crisis in our subway system," said Jack Nierenberg, vice president of Passengers United.

The latest NYPD data shows shootings are down 25% citywide compared to this time last year. While crime in transit is down 2.4% compared to 2022, it's up 6.6% compared to 2010.

"If this shooting today did not scream a safety crisis, I don't know what did," Nierenberg said.

Hours after the shooting, CBS New York saw police officers patrolling the station and riding the C train.

"I feel like it's getting worse, but after seeing cops here, I'm like, 'OK, I'm a little safe.' OK for now. But I don't know, when they're not here and it's not as crowded as usual, I might not be safe," Williams said.

Both victims were rushed to local hospitals where they are being treated for theor injuries. Both are expected to survive.

Investigators have not made any arrests and ask anyone with information to call police.
