LI Neighborhood Targeted By Overnight Car Thieves

BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Residents in Bay Shore were left to assess the damage Wednesday morning after 17 cars were broken into in a series of robberies that left neighbors with shattered car windows and stolen property.

"My car was broken into as well as my neighbor's across the street," Colleen Jockers, of Bay Shore, said. "Both houses around the corners, two blocks over."

Neighbors on several blocks were victimized -- but what was stolen was inconsistent. A wallet was taken from one vehicle, but a laptop was left untouched from another.

Neighbors even went so far as to call the thieves 'dumb,' with one neighbor saying the suspect took an owner's manual that had a $20 bill in it, but in their haste to get away, the bill slipped out and was left in the driveway, TV 10/55 Long Island Bureau Chief Richard Rose reported.

"They broke out the back passenger door window on my wife's car," Michael Ackerson, a Bay Shore neighbor, said. "They didn't take anything, they just took off."

Neighbors said one homeowner might have caught video of the potential suspect on their home surveillance system. The suspect is described as wearing a hoodie and seemed to be getting help from another person on a bicycle.

Suffolk County Police would not confirm if they have surveillance video, but detectives are investigating the situation.

Something's got to be done," Jockers said. "I'm here 24 years, it's unacceptable. You know, we all work too hard for this to happen."
