Carmelo Anthony, Ray Lewis Call For Calm In Baltimore
BALTIMORE (CBSNewYork) -- Carmelo Anthony says residents of Baltimore need to "build our city up not tear it down" with unrest at a boiling point following the death of Freddie Gray in police custody.
Anthony -- a Brooklyn-born star of the New York Knicks who was raised in Baltimore -- took to social media as riots broke out Monday night, forcing Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to declare a state of emergency.
"I know my community is fed up," Anthony wrote on Instagram. "I'm all about fighting for what we believe in. The anger, the resentment, the neglect that our community feels right now, will not change over night. Continue, fighting for what you believe in. But remember, it takes no time to destroy something. But, it can take forever to build it back up."
Former Ravens star Ray Lewis also made an emotional plea with a citywide curfew set to be enforced starting Tuesday.
#Violence is not the answer. We must have #peace in our #city, we are a city that's built on #Believing in each other. #BaltimoreRiots
