Authorities: Separate Shootings Leave Two Dead In Newark On New Year's Day
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two people have been fatally shot in Newark in separate incidents on New Year's Day.
Authorities say 36-year-old Calvin Austin of Newark was found at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday about a half-mile from the central business district. He was pronounced dead approximately one hour later at University Hospital.
At about 6:45 p.m., the body of 53-year-old Morristown resident Thomas Haskins was found in a car in the city's southwest section near Interstate 78.
The Essex County prosecutor's office says the deaths don't appear to be related.
