Amtrak Train To NYC Delayed After Hitting Dump Truck In Alabama

BESSEMER, Ala. (CBSNewYork) -- An Amtrak train headed to New York from New Orleans was delayed Friday after crashing into a dump truck in Alabama.

The train, which was filled with Louisiana State University football fans, hit the dump truck in Bessemer, Alabama near Birmingham around 3 p.m. Eastern time, according to CBS affiliate WAFB-TV, Baton Rouge.

The truck driver was killed, the station reported. There were 124 passengers on the train at the time, and no injuries were reported onboard, Amtrak said.

Bessemer police said the railroad crossing arms were working when the crash happened, and an investigation was under way on whether the truck driver was trying to beat the train, WAFB reported.

The train – Amtrak Train 20 on the Crescent service – had left New Orleans Friday morning and had let off about 100 LSU football fans in Tuscaloosa just before the accident, WAFB reported.

Service on the train later resumed.
