CBS2 Exclusive: Amtrak Train Bound For NYC Hit By Unknown Object

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Amtrak officials are investigating after an unknown object hit a passenger train and cracked a window as it was traveling to New York on Sunday evening.

According to Amtrak officials, unidentified objects were thrown at an Acela Express train as it was traveling through the vicinity of Bridesburg, Pennsyl. at around 7 p.m.

Taylor Lorenz, 30, of Park Slope, was on the train, sitting just a few seats down from the damaged window.

"There was this great boom. Sounded like a tray table drop. Like really hard and strong and loud," Lorenz told CBS2's Scott Rapoport.

According to Lorenz, the train stopped at the Metropark station in New Jersey, with Amtrak police boarding the train to investigate the incident.

"Oh my God something hit the train. And immediately everybody looked at it and said 'oh my God it's a gunshot," Lorenz said. "Is that a bullet hole? What is that in there? What's going on?"

But on Sunday night, a spokesperson for Amtrak said they have not yet determined what it was that may have struck the train and damaged the window.

Lorenz said one thing that struck her is something the conductor said.

"He said that it look like something like that had happened before," Lorenz said.

The train had originated from Washington D.C. and was destined for New York City, according to officials.

Officials said there were 201 passengers on the train at the time of the incident.

"Amtrak and local authorities are investigating the incident, including the type of objects hitting train," Amtrak officials said in a statement.

The incident comes on the heels of the deadly Amtrak Derailment last May. When a dispatcher reported the train has either been hit by a rock or shot at. That train was also an Acela heading to New York.
