Envoy Air Plane Evacuated On LaGuardia Runway Due To Smoke In Cockpit

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - An Envoy Air flight from Tennessee was evacuated on the runway at LaGuardia Airport Wednesday afternoon.

Flight 3340 on Envoy Air -- formerly known as American Eagle -- had just taken off and was bound for Knoxville, Tenn. when the plane's pilots reported smoke in the cockpit, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The plane turned around and made an emergency landing at 3:20 p.m., briefly closing a runway.

The plane's 44 passengers and 3 crew were evacuated on the runway. Emergency chutes were not deployed.

Evacuated passengers were taken to the terminal on buses.

The plane was towed away and the runway reopened.
