AG: Police In South Jersey Shot And Killed Man After He Advanced With Broken Glass Bottle

VENTNOR CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Authorities say a man was shot and killed after allegedly advancing on police officers with a broken bottle along a road in southern New Jersey.

The state attorney general's office says Ventnor and Atlantic City officers responded shortly before 4:30 p.m. Thursday to a 911 call about a man behaving erratically in Ventnor.

The attorney general's office said officers found the man walking in and out of a marshy area along the roadway while holding a broken glass bottle in his hand. Officials say the officers tried to offer him aid but he refused commands to drop the bottle and kept walking back and forth on the roadway, where police had stopped traffic.

At about 4:30 p.m. Friday, the attorney general's office said, the man "advanced on officers with the broken bottle in his hand and multiple officers fired their weapons." The man was rushed to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where he was pronounced dead at about 6 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities said officials were still trying to confirm the man's identity. The attorney general's office is investigating the shooting as is required by law.
