Several Injured After SUV Jumps Curb, Strikes Group Of Pedestrians In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Several people have been injured after an SUV flipped and struck a group of pedestrians in the Bronx.

According to police, the vehicle was traveling southbound on Southern Blvd. near Grote Street when it jumped the curb and crashed into six people, including a two-year-old boy around 4:30 p.m.

That SUV has been towed away, but left glass and crushed pieces of the vehicle in a trail across the sidewalk Friday night. The wrecked vehicle jumped the curb then flipped over in between two churches - hitting six people on a stoop.

"I look outside and the car is flipped over," Alexander Sumner said.

"We got outside and just people screaming."

"This car came out of nowhere," Isha Sumner added.

They were helping during an outreach program for immigrants - as they do every Friday - when police say the woman driving black SUV lost control close to the Bronx Zoo.

"One of the ladies taken to the ER had a nervous breakdown because she saw the baby fly," Isha Sumner told CBS2's Jessica Layton.

"The vehicle hit them, knocked them by the side door over there, I got here about four bodies were laying over there," Kenneth Goodson, the church deacon said.

Goodson pointed out when the SUV crashed, it damaged two metal banisters outside Friendship Community Church. Members raced to the scene when they heard.

There were three people in the SUV including an 11-year-old boy.

"Praying for the people that got hurt, but glad my family is OK," Alexander Sumner added.

Police are looking into the possibility the driver accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal. She's not expected to be charged.
