79th Street Boat Basin Reopens After Sandy Repairs
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Part of the 79th Street Boat Basin reopened Tuesday after undergoing years of repairs due to Superstorm Sandy.
The boat basin's so called A-Dock, which is a 370-foot-long fixed pier, has been closed to the public since the October 2012 storm.
"Sandy really rendered the pier unusable and unsafe to walk on, it really did a number on it," Citywide Marinas Operations Manager Nate Groves said, adding waterborne pests also ate holes in the wooden pilings.
Groves said the wood has been replaced with concrete-filled steel pilings, and the public now has access to its amenities once again, including the floating kayak launch.
"It's also our primary spot for educational vessels to come and dock with us. Some historic vessels you'll see along the Hudson River, like the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater or the Mystic Whaler," Groves said.
The price tag for the reconstruction was $7.8 million.
