6 people hurt, dozens more displaced in Bronx fire

NEW YORK -- A three-alarm fire in a Bronx apartment building sent several people to the hospital and left others without a home.

The fire broke out just before 10 p.m. Monday inside a four story building on Boynton Avenue just off Watson Avenue in the Soundview section.

Shattered glass, parts of window frames and other debris could be spotted on the ground in an alleyway next to the four-story apartment building which burned overnight.

Video of the fire shows it shooting into the air from the roof while crews worked to put it out. It took more than two hours to get the fire under control.

"It's horrendous... things happen, unfortunately. I hope they're OK," one neighbor said.

At least six people were taken to the hospital, including three firefighters. All of them had minor injuries.

"Just shocked. Stuff like that doesn't happen around here. Just shocking," one area resident said.

There's no word from officials yet on what caused the fire, but the building's superintendent spoke with CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook and said he's being told a space heater used at the time in an apartment on the second floor may be to blame.

Dozens of people are displaced. At least 13 people who are currently being helped by the Red Cross. Their efforts include helping them find temporary shelter and financial assistance.
