Queens Archery lets beginners, experts, and Katniss wannabes get their bow and arrow on. Generally an hour of shooting and equipment rental costs about $20. (A free lesson is included with your first rental.) Experienced archers can bring their own equipment and participate in regular leagues and tournaments. Don't believe this is a workout? Let us know how your arm feels after holding up a compound or recurve bow for 60 minutes.

Started in 1984 by Daniel "Tiger" Schulmann, who retired undefeated after more than 100 competitions, the academy that bears his name teaches kickboxing (muay thai), karate, boxing, grappling (jiu-jitsu), and mixed martial arts throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, and Pennsylvania. Run by former Marines, Warrior Fitness Boot Camp will have you ready for combat in no time. And, yes, you probably will be yelled at, or at least encouraged very loudly. But don't expect Full Metal Jacket. The environment is supportive and caters to all levels of fitness. Each class includes a lively, oft-changing mix of free weights, running, calisthenics, an obstacle course, circuit training, and stretching.

Church Street Boxing Gym made headlines in 2012 when a video - an expletive-filled rant starring trainer Eric Kelly - went viral. Kelly is a former Olympic alternate, who said he trains "Wall Street nerds" at the downtown gym. While the facility's location means that Wall Street folks do frequent the gym, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis have also trained at Church Street. All skill levels are welcome. While the focus is on boxing, Muay Thai and wrestling, classes are offered as well.

If you've always dreamed of being a jedi, here's your chance. Among the offerings at Sword Class NYC are German longsword, siljun dobup, and kendo. This is the only school in the U.S. that teaches western and eastern sword styles simultaneously. Sword Class NYC's official name is Sung Do Kwan in Korean and Seitokan in Japanese, both of which translate as "Academy of the Sacred Sword."
